If this sounds like you
- You run, race, ride, or teach yoga, and your fitness is already something you're proud of.
- Strength training is the one piece you've never quite figured out.
- You know muscle and bone density matter more every year after 40, and you want to get ahead of it.
- You've picked up weights on your own, but never knew if the program made sense.
- You'd rather hand the programming to someone who knows what they're doing.
You've built the engine. Now we build the frame around it.
What strength adds to the fitness you already have
Strength that carries over
Your program is built around what you already do. Stronger legs and hips for race day, a stronger back and shoulders for your practice, and less wear on the joints that take a beating.
Muscle and bone you keep
After 40, muscle and bone density decline unless you give them a reason not to. Well-coached, progressively heavier lifting is that reason, and it shapes how you'll move at 70.
Programming you can hand off
You're the expert in your own field. Here, you get to just be the client. I write the plan, adjust it as you progress, and explain the why whenever you want it.
Foundational Strength Integration. I call this approach FSI. We build the base first, so everything you add on top of it lasts.
How we get started
Book a free consult
We talk through your goals, your schedule, and your history with exercise. In person at Iron House Gym or by phone, whichever is easier for you.
Do your FSI Movement Assessment
I look at how you move, where you're strong, and where years of running, racing, or practice have left you stiff or compensating. Your program is built from what I see.
Start training
We train one-on-one at Iron House Gym, on a plan that works alongside your races, classes, or practice instead of competing with them.

Who you'll be working with
I'm Amber Shields. I have a master's degree in exercise science, I'm working on my PhD, and I've been coaching for more than eight years. I'm a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist and a competitive powerlifter, and teaching someone their first real deadlift is still one of my favorite parts of the job.
Many of my clients have been with me for years. I care about how you're doing as a whole person, and sometimes that means helping you make sense of what your doctor said or pointing you to the right provider.
Questions you might be sitting on
I'm already in good shape. Do I really need a coach for strength?
Being fit and being strong are different skills. Most clients like you have great endurance or mobility and real gaps in strength. A coach closes those gaps faster, and more safely, than guessing.
Will lifting hurt my race times or my flexibility?
Done right, it helps both. We plan your training around your races, classes, or practice, so strength supports what you love doing instead of taking energy from it.
Is it safe to start lifting heavier in my 50s?
Yes, with good coaching. We start with the movement assessment, build your technique first, and add load as your body is ready. Plenty of people set their best lifts well after 50.
I have old injuries or cranky joints. Can I still do this?
Tell me about it in the consult. I work with aches and old injuries all the time, and my approach is to work through them with you, not just work around them.
